Digital services
Citizens in Denmark receive mail from Danish public authorities digitally. You will therefore not receive any mail from public authorities in your physical mailbox.
Both the digital mailbox and the messages are called Digital Post.
You receive Digital Post from Danish public authorities from the age of 15, and it is your obligation to read it. You are obligated to read it because it concerns important events in your life that you have to attend to. You might have been accepted to an education, received an institutional placement for you child, or you have an appointment at the hospital. Such information will be sent to you via Digital Post.
If you are not able to receive Digital Post from public authorities, you can apply for exemption and instead receive the messages as ordinary physical mail.
In Digital Post you can:
- receive post from public authorities
- send post to public authorities
Watch a short explainer video on Digital Post:
If you have a Danish CPR number, you receive your Digital Post from public authorities automatically.
In order to log on to Digital Post, you need a MitID which is your digital ID for online public self-service. Learn more about MitID and how to get it:
Once you have a CPR number and a MitID, you will be able to access Digital Post from the Digital Post icon at the top of lifeindenmark.dk or the Digital Post app, which can be downloaded in the App Store and Google Play Store.
No CPR number?
If you do not yet have a CPR number, you can apply for one at the International Citizen Service provided that you stay in Denmark for more than 3 months.

If you do not have a MitID and, for instance, have received a summons from your hospital that you need to read immediately. In that case, you should contact your local municipality (kommune). Here the employees can help you get MitID. It is important that you bring valid identification in order to receive MitID.
If you do not have a permanent residence in the country, it will no longer be required of you to use Digital Post when communicating with Danish public authorities.
If you leave the country for a shorter or longer period, your Digital Post account will still be active by default in order for you to receive secure Digital Post from Danish public authorities. If you do not want to receive Digital Post from Danish public authorities after having left Denmark, you must apply for an exemption – preferably, before you leave the country.
What should I do before I leave Denmark?
If you do not want to receive Digital Post from Danish public authorities after having left the country, you must apply for an exemption due to departure. You do this by showing up at your Danish local municipality – therefore, remember to get it done before moving abroad.
What can I do if I regret my exemption?

An exemption from Digital Post is indefinite. This means that the exemption does not expire and that you can sign up for Digital Post again at any time.
What happens when you are exempt from Digital Post?
- You receive the post as ordinary letter post on your registered address or any other preferred address if provided.
- As of 1 June 2023, you are automatically exempt from using many public self-services. Public self-services are digital services on public websites – for instance, where you can report that you are moving or apply for housing benefits. You can still choose to use the self-services if you want to.
When you are exempt, you can choose to have any unopened Digital Post that you have received within the last 6 months forwarded to you. The mail will be sent to your registered address as ordinary letter post, unless you provide a different address.
The exemption does not include all Digital Post
Your exemption does not include:
- Post from certain public authorities: Due to other legislation, some public authorities are allowed to send you Digital Post. This can be, for instance, pay slips from public authorities or post in connection with applying for SU (State Educational Grant). If you need the post as ordinary letter post, you need to contact the sender.
- Post from private companies: The exemption does not apply to post that you receive digitally from private companies, for instance your bank or your insurance company. If you do not wish to receive post digitally from a private company, you must contact e-Boks A/S, Netcompany and/or the private company with which you have entered into a customer agreement to find another solution.
Citizens who are unable to receive Digital Post and meet at least one of the exemption criteria can apply for an exemption from Digital Post and instead receive post from the public via letter mail.

This requires a form that gives the person a power of attorney. The form can be hand out at the local municipality or you can download it here. The form needs to be signed by you as well as the person helping you.
If you have forgotten your user ID, you can find it yourself in the MitID app, or you can get help from the MitID Support or Citizen Services.
If you have forgotten your PIN, you can reactivate your MitID app by scanning your passport and your face in the MitID app.
Alternatively, you can:
- call the MitID support – they can send you a temporary PIN via SMS once you have identified yourself on the phone by providing your passport or driving licence number as well as answered a few questions based on information registered about you in the Civil Registration System (CPR) that only you would know.
- If you have a ‘back up’ in the form of, for example, a MitID code display or an extra MitID app installed on another device – such as a tablet – you can log on to MitID.dk and get an activation code to reactivate your app.

It is no longer possible to get and use NemID.
If you wish to continue using digital self-services, you have to use MitID.
Go to MitID.dk to see how you get MitID:
The Danish national eID, MitID, is every resident’s personal key to digital services in Denmark, including self-service solutions provided by the public sector.
In Denmark, your contact with the public authorities and many private companies starts on the internet. In a large number of areas, you are obliged to use digital self-service.
In order to access digital self-services, you need MitID which is your personal digital ID for login and digital signature. It allows for citizens to access their public services 24 hours a day.
In the public sector this applies, for example, when you:
- change your address
- apply for childcare
- see your tax
- choose a doctor
- read your Digital Post
- leave Denmark
The film 'Welcome to Digital Denmark' introduces you to for instance MitID:
Denmark has recently replaced NemID with MitID.
NemID was closed on 31 October 2023. This means that you can no longer acquire or use NemID.
If you have just arrived in Denmark, you can get MitID in 2 different ways:
- By scanning your passport or ID card in the MitID app
- By contacting your local Citizen Service.
Get MitID with passport or ID card
To get MitID in the MitID app, you need a valid passport (Danish or other nationalities) or an ID card with a chip.
Please note that your phone must be able to scan the chip in your passport or ID card. Your phone must therefore be a smartphone – an iPhone 7 or newer or a newer Android phone.
Steps:
- Download the MitID app from App Store or Google Play Store.
- Open the MitID app and tap the menu in the top left corner. Tap ‘Get MitID using passport’.
- Scan the code and read the chip in your passport.
- Then scan your face to compare it with your passport photo.
- The MitID app now generates a 3D FaceScan, and if the result of this comparison is satisfactory, the app confirms your identity so that you can create MitID directly in the app.
- You are then ready to use MitID. Once you have created MitID, you can use MitID as an app on all iPhones from iPhone 5s onwards and most Android phones. If you do not want to use MitID as an app, you can order a code viewer or code reader.
Please note that if you already have the MitID app, you may need to update it for it to register passports or ID cards from other nationalities than Danish.
Find more information and video guides on how to scan your passport to get MitID at MitID.dk:
Get MitID at your local Citizen Service
You can apply for MitID by booking an appointment at your local municipality’s Citizen Service.
To get help from the Citizen Service you must:
- Bring valid documentation
- Answer a number of questions about yourself (based on data from the CPR Register) or bring a witnesser, who can confirm who you are.
Find more information on how to get MitID at Citizen Service at MitID.dk:
If you do not have a Danish CPR number, you must use a P code instead. A P code is an 8 digit code that you enter in the MitID app, if you use your passport/ID card to create or change a MitID.
To read more about MitID, please go to MitID.dk.
Register for NemSMS
It is free to register for NemSMS. You can register and opt out by doing the following:
- Log in to Digital Post with your MitID.
- In the menu, you will find 'NemSMS – text message service'.
- Now you can register for or opt out of NemSMS. At registration, it is important that you register the correct mobile number.
If you are signed up for Digital Post and have already chosen to receive messages regarding new post via text messages (SMS), the NemSMS solution will use the same mobile number to send you service messages. If this is the case, you only need to accept the terms for NemSMS at registration. When you accept the terms, you are giving all public authorities who use NemSMS permission to send you service messages.
What if I get a new mobile number?
If you change your mobile number, you have to inform the public sector about your new number, to ensure that service messages (NemSMS) and messages concerning new post (Digital Post) are sent correctly to you. You alone are responsible for updating your mobile number.
You can change your mobile number by doing the following:
- Log in to Digital Post with your MitID.
- In the menu, you will find 'NemSMS – text message service' and within this menu 'View and edit your mobile phone number', where you can change your mobile number.
NemSMS only supports Danish telephone numbers
The solution for public NemSMS only supports Danish telephone numbers. In other words, it is only possible to register a mobile number with the country code +45.
NemSMS is a public text message service, where you can receive service messages per text message (SMS) from public authorities. The solution is called NemSMS, because it makes it easier for you to remember your appointments with the public authorities.
NemSMS only supports Danish telephone numbers (country code +45).
You can still be registered for NemSMS, even if you are exempt from Digital Post.
What is the difference between service messages (NemSMS) and messages concerning new post (Digital Post)?
- The NemSMS service gives you the opportunity to receive service messages per text message from the public authorities, for example regarding the payout of your holiday allowance or as a reminder of your appointment at the hospital.
- The Digital Post solution gives you the opportunity to receive messages concerning new post via email and text message, when new post arrives in your digital mailbox.
You are not automatically registered for NemSMS, even if you receive messages concerning new Digital Post via text message.
Film about NemSMS
You can find short animated films on the Agency for Digital Government's website regarding NemSMS, Digital Post and MitID. The films are with English speech and subtitles:
The films are also available in Danish, Danish sign language, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Farsi and Somali:
As an example, NemSMS helps you to remember your appointments with public authorities. If you have an appointment at the hospital, you will receive a reminder of the appointment. You can also be informed about when your holiday allowance is paid out, and when the pay is expected to be in your account.
